I was thinking last week about music and kids mostly. Humans apparently are the only animals that have been able to put together the puzzle of music together, got to know this from a Netflix-Vox documentary. So technically its part of evolution for us, and gives us a survival advantage of sorts. Just like any of the organs that have given us a survival advantage, music should also have a survival advantage for us. What could that be?
I started reading up on the relationship between Music and Human Evolution.
One article mentioned it as – "Music is one of those things that we do spontaneously, reflecting brain machinery linked to communicative functions, enlarged and diversified across a broad array of human activities. Music cuts across diverse cognitive capabilities and resources, including numeracy, language, and space perception. In the same way, music intersects with cultural boundaries, facilitating our “social self” by linking our shared experiences and intentions." (You can read the article here)
And that blew my mind. One skill that can bring so much difference. Music kind of defines humans as a species.
Combined with the fact that 90% of the brain of a child grows by the age of 5 yrs – it’s amazing how music can benefit kids and why it’s such an important need for any and every human growing up.
And when you see them jump and clap and sing together, it’s pure joy.
Obviously, my philosophy around how to inculcate music in early childhood is different, but I always hope that music becomes a part of their lives in whatever form possible.
The Kids’ Jamming sessions are one of the best ways I spend my time and get to learn and interact with kids. This is one of the posters I made for it.
